Lake Champlain Colonial Waterbird Database Project
Caspian Tern

This large tern has been documented nesting on Popasquash Island and Young Island in Vermont . A single pair was observed nesting in 2001 on both of the above islands and was believed to be the same pair. One pair nested in 2003 on Young Island. A small colony of approximately 20-40 pairs has established itself on the Four Brothers Islands in New York in 2005 and has grown to 50 pairs in 2007. This species probably comes to Lake Champlain from larger colonies in the Great Lakes.
