We will be posting job descriptions for Summer Camp Interns and Instructors in February 2008.

POSITION TITLE: SUMMER DAY CAMP INSTRUCTOR

Location: Audubon Vermont’s, Green Mountain Audubon Center in Huntington.

Description: The Green Mountain Audubon Center in Huntington provides experienced teachers and environmental educators with an opportunity to work in a day camp setting. Instructors may choose to work 25 hours a week with our Preschool Nature Camp or 40 hours a week with our Ecology Day Camp. Children ages 4 and 5 attend Preschool Nature Camp and children ages 6 to 12 attend Ecology Day Camp. Both camps run for 8 weeks and campers spend time exploring the meadows, ponds and forests at the Audubon Center. Instructors teach outdoors, develop curriculum and work as part of a dynamic education team. Audubon will challenge you to enhance your teaching and interpretive skills while encouraging you to further your studies in the natural history of Vermont!

Commitment:

  • June 11, 2008 to August 18, 2008. (9 weeks and 4 days)
  • Ecology Day Camp daily work hours are from 8:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday.
    There is one overnight camping trip and one week when staff hours are from 2:00 pm- 9:30 pm.
  • Preschool Nature Camp daily work hours are from 8:00am-1:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Responsibilities:

  • Attend a camp training led by professional Audubon Teacher/Naturalists.
  • Develop and implement eight weeks of ecology/nature-based curriculum.
  • Provide a fun, educational experience for children during 8 weeks of camp.
  • Maintain the safety and well being of all camp participants.
  • Act as a mentor to college intern(s).
  • Write a final evaluation of your camp experience by August 22.

Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching children ages 4 and 5 and/or ages 6 to 12.
  • Experience with curriculum development and implementation.
  • BS or BA in Environmental Studies, Education or related field preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of the natural history of Vermont.
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Ability to pass criminal background check.
  • First Aid and CPR certification is required by June 23.

Interns may choose to work 25 hours a week with our Preschool Nature Camp or 40 hours a week with our Ecology Day Camp. Interns work closely with children ages 4-5 or 6-12 for 8 weeks exploring the meadows, ponds and forests at the Audubon Center. Interns gain first hand experience teaching, developing curriculum and working as part of a dynamic education team. Audubon challenges interns to build their interpretive and people skills while encouraging them to further their studies in the natural history of Vermont.

Commitment:

  • June 11, 2008 – August 18, 2008 (9 weeks and 4 days).

  • Assist Instructors in providing a fun, educational experience for campers.
  • Work with children ages 4 and 5 (Preschool Camp) or children ages 6-12 (Ecology Camp).
  • Learn to develop age appropriate curriculum and implement daily lesson plans.
  • Fulfill academic requirements as well as Audubon’s work requirements to receive credit at your school.
  • Complete self-evaluations throughout the summer and write a final evaluation of your experience by August 22.

Qualifications:

  • Must be a college student working to receive credit in your area of study.
  • Strong love for the outdoors and interest in the natural history of Vermont.
  • Experience working with children is preferred.
  • Majoring in education, environmental studies, natural resources or like field.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • First Aid and CPR certification is required by June 23.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Must be able to commit to the entire period of work.
